Your beauty tools touch your skin every day. They pick up dead skin cells, product residue, bacteria, and natural oils with every use. If you're not cleaning them regularly, you're reapplying all of that back onto your face — which can cause breakouts, irritation, and skin congestion that has nothing to do with your products.

Cleaning and storing your tools properly also extends their life significantly. A well-maintained facial roller or gua sha stone can last years. A neglected one deteriorates quickly and becomes less effective.

Here's how to look after every tool in your routine.

Facial rollers and gua sha stones

Clean after every use. Rinse under lukewarm water — not hot, which can crack natural stones over time — and use a small amount of gentle soap or micellar water to remove any product or oil residue. Wipe clean with a soft cloth and leave to air dry completely before storing.

For a deeper clean once a week, use a diluted solution of gentle soap and water. Avoid soaking natural stone tools for extended periods as this can cause cracking or discolouration over time.

Store in a clean pouch or the box they came in, away from direct sunlight. If you keep your rose quartz roller in the fridge for cooling benefits, make sure it's fully dry before refrigerating to prevent moisture buildup.

Ice globes

Rinse thoroughly with warm water and soap after each use, paying attention to the neck and handle area where product can accumulate. Dry completely before returning to the freezer or refrigerator.

Check the seal around the neck of each globe periodically. If any liquid has leaked or the seal looks compromised, replace the globes. Never heat ice globes or expose them to extreme temperatures beyond normal refrigeration.

Derma rollers

Derma rollers require the most rigorous cleaning of any facial tool because the needles create micro-channels in the skin. A contaminated roller introduces bacteria directly below the skin's surface, which can cause infection.

After every use, rinse immediately under hot running water to remove skin debris. Then submerge the roller head in 70 percent isopropyl alcohol for ten minutes. Remove, shake off excess, and leave to air dry completely in a clean, covered container.

Never share a derma roller. Replace when needles become blunt — typically every three to six months depending on frequency of use. Blunt needles tear rather than puncture, causing unnecessary skin trauma.

LED face masks

Wipe the inner surface of your LED face mask with a soft, slightly damp cloth after each use. Never submerge electrical components in water. For a deeper clean, use a gentle antibacterial wipe on the inner surface, avoiding the LED panels themselves.

Store in the carry case or box provided, away from dust and direct sunlight which can degrade the LED panels over time.

High frequency wands

Wipe the glass electrode with a cotton pad soaked in isopropyl alcohol before and after each use. Allow to dry completely before storing. Never submerge the electrode or handle in water. Store with the electrode capped or in the original case to prevent breakage.

Electric blackhead removers

Detach the suction head after each use and rinse under warm running water. Allow to dry fully before reattaching. Wipe the body of the device with a slightly damp cloth. Clean the filter if your device has one according to the manufacturer's instructions.

General storage rules

Keep all tools away from direct sunlight, which degrades materials over time. Store electrical devices away from moisture — a bathroom cabinet is convenient but steam accumulation can shorten the lifespan of electronic components. A dedicated drawer or beauty organiser in a bedroom is ideal.

Clean tools work better, last longer, and are safer for your skin. Five minutes of maintenance after each use protects both your investment and your complexion.
