Is Your Skincare Routine Actually Working? Here's How to Tell
Share
You follow your skincare routine every morning and evening. You cleanse, tone, moisturise, and maybe throw in a serum or two. But weeks go by and you find yourself asking: is any of this actually doing anything?
It's one of the most common frustrations in skincare. You're putting in the effort, spending the money, and yet you're not sure whether your skin is genuinely improving or whether you're just going through the motions.
Here's how to tell the difference — and what to do if your routine isn't delivering.
Your skin should feel comfortable after every step
The first and most immediate sign that your routine is working is how your skin feels after you've completed it. If your cleanser leaves your face feeling tight, stripped, or dry, that's a red flag. A good cleanser removes dirt and excess oil without disrupting your skin barrier.
After moisturising, your skin should feel hydrated and settled — not greasy, not tight, not irritated. If it doesn't, something in your routine isn't right for your skin type.
Progress takes time — but not forever
Skincare is a long game. Most active ingredients take four to twelve weeks to show visible results. Vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide — none of these work overnight. If you've been consistent for less than a month, it's too early to judge.
That said, you should notice some improvement within six to eight weeks if your routine is genuinely suited to your skin. If you've been consistent for three months and nothing has changed, your products or tools may not be the right fit.
Track your skin, not your feelings
Your perception of your skin varies day to day based on sleep, stress, hormones, and hydration. The most reliable way to assess progress is to take photos in the same lighting, at the same time of day, every two to four weeks.
Comparing photos side by side removes the guesswork. You'll often find your skin has improved more than you realised — or that a particular product introduced around a certain date coincided with a breakout or dryness.
Your tools matter as much as your products
Skincare products work at the surface, but beauty tools can take your routine to another level by improving absorption, circulation, and lymphatic drainage.
A rose quartz facial roller used after applying serum helps drive the product deeper into the skin while reducing puffiness. Gua sha improves circulation and gives your complexion a natural lift over time. A derma roller creates micro-channels that dramatically increase the absorption of whatever you apply afterwards.
If you've been using products without tools, adding the right device to your routine can make a noticeable difference within weeks.
Signs your routine is working
- Your skin feels comfortable and balanced throughout the day
- Redness, dryness or oiliness has reduced compared to your baseline
- Breakouts are less frequent or less severe
- Your skin looks more even in tone and texture in photos
- You're going longer between the moments where your skin feels "off"
Signs it isn't
- Your skin feels tight, greasy or uncomfortable after your routine
- You're breaking out in areas you didn't before
- Redness or irritation has increased
- Three months in and you see no change in your photos
If your routine isn't working, the most common culprits are over-cleansing, using too many actives at once, or products that aren't suited to your skin type. Strip it back to the basics — cleanser, moisturiser, SPF — and reintroduce products one at a time.
The right routine, with the right tools, should make your skin visibly better over time. If it isn't, it's not your skin that's the problem — it's the routine. Use code GLOW15 for 15% off your first Glomi order.
