Red vs Blue LED: Which Light Therapy Colour Is Right for Your Skin?
Share
LED light therapy masks have become one of the most popular at-home skincare devices — but with multiple colour settings available, it's not always clear which one to use for which concern. Red and blue are the two most common, and they work in completely different ways. Here's how to choose the right colour for your skin goals.
What red LED does
Red light operates at wavelengths typically between 620nm and 700nm, which allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin than blue. At this depth it stimulates fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. The result over consistent use is improved skin firmness, reduced appearance of fine lines, and a more even skin tone. Red LED also has an anti-inflammatory effect, making it useful for calming redness and accelerating the skin's natural repair process.
Red is the setting to use if your primary concerns are ageing, dullness, loss of firmness, or general skin health maintenance.
What blue LED does
Blue light sits at shorter wavelengths, typically around 415nm, which means it works closer to the skin's surface. Its primary action is antibacterial — blue light destroys the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts by targeting porphyrins within the bacterial cells. It also helps regulate sebum production over time, which can reduce the frequency of breakouts.
Blue is the setting to use if your primary concern is active acne, congestion, or oily skin.
The other colours and what they do
The 7 Colour LED Light Therapy Face Mask includes five additional wavelengths beyond red and blue:
- Green: Targets hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone by inhibiting excess melanin production.
- Yellow: Supports lymphatic drainage and reduces redness — particularly useful for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.
- Purple: Combines red and blue benefits — useful when you're dealing with both ageing and acne simultaneously.
- Cyan: Calms inflammation and soothes irritated skin.
- White: The broadest spectrum setting, supporting overall skin renewal and product absorption.
Can you use more than one colour?
Yes — and most people benefit from rotating. A common approach is to use blue two to three times per week during a breakout period, and red on the other days for general maintenance and anti-ageing. The purple setting is a practical shortcut if you want to address both concerns in the same session without switching.
How long per session?
Most LED masks recommend 10–20 minutes per session. Longer isn't more effective — the skin reaches saturation point, and beyond that you're not adding benefit. Consistency matters more than session length: three to four times per week over several weeks produces noticeably better results than daily use for a fortnight then stopping.
The 7 Colour LED Light Therapy Face Mask covers all the wavelengths above in one device. It's the most versatile single tool for addressing multiple skin concerns at home — and it's also available as part of the Anti-Ageing Pro Set bundle.
