What is High Frequency Therapy and How Does It Work?

High frequency therapy has been a staple of professional skincare treatments for over a century — and now it's available at home. Here's everything you need to know about how it works and what it can do for your skin.

What is high frequency therapy?

High frequency therapy uses a glass electrode tube filled with either neon or argon gas to deliver a mild, safe electrical current to the skin. The Glomi High Frequency Facial Wand comes with four interchangeable electrode heads — mushroom, tongue, bent and comb — each designed for a different treatment area.

How does high frequency therapy work?

When the glass electrode makes contact with the skin, it produces a mild electrical current that generates heat and produces ozone. This ozone has powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties — killing surface bacteria, reducing inflammation and stimulating circulation.

The neon vs argon difference

Most high frequency devices use either neon gas (producing an orange/red light) or argon gas (producing a violet light). Both work similarly but argon is generally considered slightly more effective for acne treatment while neon is better for anti-ageing and general skin stimulation.

What can high frequency therapy treat?

Acne and breakouts The antibacterial ozone produced kills acne-causing bacteria on contact — making high frequency one of the most effective treatments for acne available. Read our detailed guide on using the High Frequency Wand for acne for more detail.

Enlarged pores Regular high frequency treatment tightens and minimises enlarged pores over time.

Fine lines and wrinkles The increased circulation and collagen stimulation from high frequency therapy helps to soften fine lines and improve overall skin firmness with consistent use.

Puffy eyes and dark circles Using the small bent electrode under the eyes helps to stimulate circulation and reduce puffiness and dark circles.

Hair growth The comb electrode used on the scalp increases blood flow to hair follicles — stimulating growth and improving overall hair health. Read our guide on using the High Frequency Wand for hair growth for full instructions.

Is high frequency therapy safe?

Yes — high frequency therapy has been used in professional skincare clinics for over 100 years and has an excellent safety record. It is non-invasive, painless and suitable for most skin types.

Who should avoid it?

Do not use if you have a pacemaker, are pregnant, have metal implants in the face, or are taking blood thinning medication. Always start on the lowest intensity setting and build up gradually.

How often should you use it?

For acne treatment, use 3-4 times per week on affected areas. For general skin health and anti-ageing, 2-3 times per week is sufficient.

The Glomi High Frequency Facial Wand is also available as part of the Glow & Go Skin Set with the LED Face Mask and Derma Roller.
